drumming with the DK2.

Our virtual reality (VR) project “Adhesive drums” spawned from a desire to make a truly interactive and immersive experience, controlled with midi drums through VR.

An interactive VR experience that gave the viewer full control on the narrative was important. After spending time on different engines, we quickly realised it would be best achieved through Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) as it supports stunningly visual immersive and interactive experiences – key to creating a memorable VR experience.

Using our Oculus Rift DK2 and a Yamaha DTX700K to drive the experience, we designed and built an interactive virtual reality drumming game on UE4.The drummer controls our 3d head (from Adhesive Live) which is constructed of musical instruments. The control and nuances present in UE4 blueprints enabled us to capture the scale and subtle delays in motion to feel as though our head movements and drum triggers are controlling the Adhesive machine. Each drum trigger controls an instrument on our Adhesive head.

Once mapped, our Adhesive head can be controlled with any midi instrument with even standard input devices.
